As a thank you for visiting this site we've put together a comprehensive, 5-page, guide to the care and preservation of your rug. Sections cover the proper ways to dust, spotclean, store and protect your rug. The file is in Adobe pdf format. Comprehensive Rug Care Guide
To safely and thoroughly clean your rug, we have developed a "Standard of Care" protocol that we follow for each rug we clean. Although there is a vast variety of rugs and many require their own specific cleaning techniques, by following the steps in our cleaning protocol we can guarantee you the best possible cleaning results. Following are the steps we take with each rug we clean. |
- Pre-inspection: We inspect every rug before cleaning to look for any areas of concern or
pre-existing characteristics that you should be made aware of. - Dusting: A rug can hide and hold pounds of dry soil in its fibers before it begins to look
dirty. We must remove this gritty dry soil prior to giving your rug its bath. - Dye testing: Dye testing is critical to determine if your rug can be safely cleaned.
- Washing: Our wash process is geared to your specific type of rug and utilizes a thorough
bath with shampoo and water. This mild and non-toxic process is the recommended cleaning method for Oriental rugs and has been used for generations by rug weavers and cleaners alike. - Drying: To keep your rug from stretching we dry your rug flat. This will prevent any dimensional
distortion which is a risk when a heavy wet rug is hung to dry. Just as with a wool sweater, your rug needs to be laid out flat and dried without the use of high heat.

The owner explains his approach
| Hi, my name is Eric Bollmann and I'm the owner of Haines & Cross. Cleaning area rugs is not as simple as it may appear. Just the fact that there is an endless variety of materials which a rug can be made of which each requires a diffrent cleaning approach. Coupled with rug construction and dye issues and you can see why most in-home carpet cleaners have stopped cleaning rugs on-site. At Haines & Cross we have taken the in-plant cleaning approach. Which means we (or you) bring each rug to our cleaning facility for a proper inspection following our Pre-Wash Inspection Sheet and a thorough cleaning following our Standard of Care cleaning protocol. |
The owner explains his credentials
| As I've explained in the previous section; cleaning area rugs is not as simple as it may seem. To gain the knowledge and expertise necessary to safely and thoroughly clean rugs one has to get and stay educated. To that end I stay in constant contact with my peer group through the Rug Secrets mentoring program. At a recent, 3-day, Rug Secrets training course I helped teach other cleaners safe rug cleaning techniques. I've also earned my Rug Cleaning Technician (RCT) certification from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and am a member and past president of the Carpet & FabriCare Institute (CFI). |
